How to Add Wireless CarPlay to a BMW with CIC, NBT or EVO Head Unit

Most BMWs built between 2008 and today share the same retrofit path: a decoder module that integrates with the factory iDrive system, adding wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto while keeping the original screen, iDrive controller and menus. The critical first step is identifying which iDrive generation the car has.

Step 1 — Identify CIC vs NBT vs EVO

CIC (2008–2014): the older iDrive with the 4:3-style menu layout, found in E87, E90, E60, E70-era cars. NBT (2012–2016): the "Next Big Thing" update with a wider display and ConnectedDrive menu — standard on most F-series cars. EVO (2015+): NBT EVO with ID5/ID6 tile-style interface on later F-series and early G-series vehicles.

The fastest check: open the iDrive menu. Tile-style interface = EVO. Horizontal list with a wide screen = NBT. Older, boxier menu = CIC. When in doubt, photograph the screen and the iDrive knob — the touch-capable knob indicates NBT or later.

Step 2 — Match the Module

Each generation needs its own decoder: BMW CIC decoder for 2008–2014 cars, BMW NBT decoder for 2012–2016, and BMW EVO decoder for 2015+. Fitment covers 1–7 Series, X1–X6, Z4 and MINI — see the full BMW fitment table.

Step 3 — What Installation Involves

The decoder connects between the head unit and the factory wiring with a vehicle-specific harness — no wire cutting, no coding on most models. A typical install takes 1–2 hours for an experienced technician: remove the head unit, connect the harness, route the microphone and USB cable, pair the phone. Wireless CarPlay connects automatically after the first pairing.

Everything factory: the original screen resolution, iDrive knob, steering-wheel buttons, factory reverse camera (plus support for aftermarket cameras), and the full OEM menu — a long-press of the MENU button switches between CarPlay and the original system.
