Audi MMI 2G, MMI 3G or MIB: Which CarPlay Decoder Do You Need?

Audi's infotainment naming confuses even experienced installers. Here is the practical breakdown for CarPlay retrofits, covering 2009–2025 model years.

MMI 2G and MMI 3G (2009–2018)

These platforms share the pop-up display and four-corner menu key layout. They cover Q1/A3, A4/A5/Q5/S4/S5 (6.5"), A6/A7/Q7 and A8 — with a subtle year difference: on 2G the A6/A7/Q7 and A8 coverage runs to 2018, while 3G versions of those models end at 2016. Match with the MMI 2G decoder or MMI 3G decoder.

MIB2 / MIB3 (2017–2025)

The modular infotainment platform in A6, A7, A8 and Q7 from 2017 onward. These cars often have CarPlay hardware capability but no activation — or an older wired-only implementation. The MIB2/MIB3 decoder adds full wireless capability.

How to Tell Them Apart

MMI 2G: red-accented menu, no jukebox. MMI 3G: gray 3D menu with joystick-capable knob. MIB: flat tile interface, often with MMI touch. The definitive check is the software version screen or a photo of the main menu — send it via WhatsApp and we confirm within hours.

Why Year Overlaps Matter
